How this course came to life
Hi, I'm Gaya
Writing scientific papers can be tough!
I’ve been there: endlessly tweaking my drafts, hunting for anything else to do besides writing the damn paper, staring blankly at the screen, debating whether to do more literature research, start writing, or just grab another coffee (coffee usually won :-).
I’ve been there: endlessly tweaking my drafts, hunting for anything else to do besides writing the damn paper, staring blankly at the screen, debating whether to do more literature research, start writing, or just grab another coffee (coffee usually won :-).
And then, one day, I decided to take the bull by the horns and find solutions to my struggles. I realized that mastering scientific writing isn’t about innate talent; it's about technique. And just like any other skill, with the right tools and approach, one can learn and enjoy it.
It's taken me long to get to this point. Now, I'm here to give you the playbook.
Frequently asked questions
Who is this course intended for?
This course is ideal for researchers, including Ph.D. students, postdocs, and professors, who want to improve their scientific writing skills and produce high-quality papers efficiently.
What types of text can I use this course for?
The course is designed to help you write a scientific article based on an empirical research, a meta-analysis, or a systematic literature review. While the principles and methods in this course can also be applied to bachelor’s, master’s, or Ph.D. theses, you may need to adapt some of the questions for these purposes.
Do I need any prior knowledge to take this course?
No prior knowledge of scientific writing is required. However, some familiarity with research methods in your field may be helpful.
How is this course different from other scientific writing courses?
Many courses teach the theory of scientific writing but don’t guide you through actually writing a paper. This course is different.
We provide you with a step-by-step method to help you go from a blank page to a complete, high-quality paper. You’ll get clear, easy-to-follow instructions for each step, making it simple to build your paper section by section. Instead of feeling overwhelmed, you’ll finish the course with a polished manuscript ready to be submitted to a journal.
How long is the course?
The course is self-paced, allowing you to progress through each module according to your availability and preference.
How much time should I dedicate to this course per week?
he time you dedicate to this course each week depends on your personal schedule, availability, and preferences. The course consists of a series of small steps, making it ideal for scientists with limited time for focused work.
If possible, we recommend cultivating a writing habit by working on your paper daily, as research shows that scientists who write daily are the most efficient.
Can I access the course material after the course ends?
The course doesn’t have an end date, so you have unlimited access to the course material. You can use the course for your current paper and future ones as well.
What are my sample articles? Where can I find them?
Having examples is the best way to figure out what type of article the journal you're going to submit your article to expects from you. That's why, in the prewriting module, I ask you to download three to five articles published in the journal where you plan to submit your paper. You'll use these sample articles throughout this course as examples to help you understand how to write the different sections of your paper.
When selecting your sample articles, make sure they are written in the same format as the one in which you intend to write your paper. If possible, choose articles that deal with the same topic as your research, use a similar methodology and have been published within the last three years.
For more information about your sample articles, go to the prewriting workbook.
